How Home Composting Gained Much Attention In 2020
According to a World Bank Report, India is the largest producer of waste. As per a 2016 estimate, 277 million tonnes of municipal solid waste is generated every year in India.
In the next 30 years, India is predicted to double the amount of waste it generates. These are staggering figures and need urgent waste management solutions.
But the year 2020 showed that everything is not lost and we can still overcome the challenge of waste management.
There is a positive shift in the mindset of people in India regarding waste management.
As the coronavirus pandemic forced people indoors, there has been a substantial increase in interest in things like kitchen gardening, home composting, and efficient waste management.
People have become more aware of the things they consume. It has initiated a great demand for organic products to maintain the overall health of the family.
People have started to grow vegetables and fruits in their house terraces, garden areas, or small spaces inside homes.
Professionals working at home have started looking for innovative ways to turn waste into resources. Children are excited to learn more about new techniques, too.
Moreover, environment enthusiasts and those advocating waste management have found support in their respective places, such as residential clubs, small communities, and even schools and corporations.
As families are staying at home, the quantity of food prepared has increased.
It has resulted in the generation of an extensive amount of organic waste. And suddenly, embracing everything natural has become a phenomenon.
Now, people are making sure to use waste as a resource. This is how home composting has gained so much attention in 2020.
If you would like to start composting at home and produce nutrients for your plants, here are some ways you can achieve your goal.
Remember, home composting will help reduce the waste baggage on the country and waste management authorities and can also help save the environment.
Waste Segregation
Home composting is a great way to reduce the quantity of household organic waste and garden waste you send to a landfill.
Here are a few steps to do home composting:-
- STEP 1
You can begin by segregating different types of waste into the dry and wet or brown and green mix. Greens are waste materials containing nitrogen or protein. This wet waste includes food leftover, coffee grounds, tea bags, vegetable and fruit peels, plant trimmings, eggshells, etc.
Browns are carbon-rich waste, and they include dried leaves, branches, twigs, sawdust, straw, cotton fabric, etc. A good mix of browns and greens improves the composting process. Do not add medical waste or pet waste into the compost pile, and avoid adding meat, bones & dairy waste in the compost pile as it can cause severe odour issues, prolong the composting process, and attract animals as well.
- STEP 2
After segregation, break or chop the waste into smaller sizes, if necessary, and add it to the compost bin. It will hasten the decomposition process. Make sure the pile is sufficiently aerated using a perforated bin or overturning the pile at regular intervals.
- STEP 3
Maintain adequate moisture content of your pile. If your compost heap is too dry, moist the mixture by adding water & if your compost heap is too wet, add dry materials into the mix to get a balance of greens and browns. Cover the bin and prevent it from direct sunlight or rainfall.
- STEP 4
Allow the microorganisms to perform their function of degrading organic waste. Leave it as it is for some time and allow the composting process to complete. By the end of this step, your compost material will be ready. After curing the compost for a week or two, it can be used for your plants.
There are two common challenges faced in home composting. Inappropriate composting techniques can lead to foul smell, and the pile may attract insects and flies.
Moreover, the time taken for complete waste degradation is prolonged. But there are innovative solutions like SoilMate that can help overcome these obstacles.
Organica Biotech’s SoilMate consists of microbes that accelerate the decomposition of waste and help in composting.
It’s odour-busting technology is known to suppress the foul smell emanated from compost piles. Furthermore, it is enriched with herbs that keep insects and flies away.
Let’s make sure to continue home composting in 2021 and save the environment. You can use SoilMate for home composting, which in turn can help in better waste management as well.
